Abstract:
AbstractOrganizational learning has been an important area in organization design, customer improvement, and knowledge management in manufacturing industries. This paper focuses on supplier-based international cooperation, in most cases under international sub-contracting production (ISCP) framework with multinational integrators, for which organizational learning, especially modular learning, proves to be vitally important to advance local production quality in developing countries, such as in China. By providing three layer modular learning model, the paper proposes a three-mode modular learning activities, namely, operation oriented (OO) learning, quality oriented (QO) learning, and function oriented (FO) learning, to discuss whether ISCP co-operation contains knowledge spill over to other non-cooperative productions. The paper concludes that under most cases, Chinese suppliers gain limited knowledge through controlled modular learning and the knowledge learnt cannot easily be leveraged to production of other modules.
