Chapter 3 in Business Analytics:Progress on Applications in Asia Pacific, 2016, pp 58-78 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: Aircraft maintenance is a labor-intensive and complex business where many factors such as capacity resources, turn-around time and contractual details play an important role in impacting the profitability of an aircraft check. This study was conducted to better understand the factors affecting an aircraft check profitability by examining both operational and financial factors using exploratory data analysis, regression and neural network on data set obtained from two financial year quarters. The findings show a clear difference in the key factors affecting profitability with labor cost-related components now playing a bigger role than past key factors such as labor rate and turn-around time. This finding provides insights to the business stakeholders on potential areas for deeper root cause analysis in the future.
