Personalised Knowledge-Based Recommender System for Travel Planning

Yiwang Linus Li

Chapter 20 in Business Analytics:Progress on Applications in Asia Pacific, 2016, pp 547-564 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: Compared to many static tour packages or fixed itinerary suggestions in travel guidebooks, a personalized, knowledge-based recommender system for travel planning may provide a flexible schedule tailored to individual preferences and tastes. In this study, the feasibility and potential of implementing a personalized recommender system in the tourism industry was demonstrated through a case study of Singapore. The paper uses public data sources — TripAdvisor and HungryGoWhere — to form a knowledge database where queries are made to retrieve and suggest relevant places of interest and restaurants to the traveler. The system is highly relevant to business travelers with scattered periods of leisure time in their schedule or budget travelers with free and easy travel plans.
