Chapter 29 in Business Analytics:Progress on Applications in Asia Pacific, 2016, pp 759-780 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: The Main Outpatient Pharmacy of National University Hospital (NUH) Medical Center aims to achieve 95th percentile of patient waiting times at the pharmacy to within 15 minutes. It was 30 minutes at the commencement of this project. This study sought to understand how the factors that can influence the time taken for completion of tasks - for example dispensing medicine in the pharmacy - can impact patient waiting times. These factors could then be shared with the pharmacy in order to fine-tune their processes to reduce patient waiting times. Factory physics principles, in particular Kingman’s formula, were used to study the processes involved, and identified areas for improvement.
