Exploring the Development of China’s Mobile Payment from the Perspective of Resource-based Platform Strategies

Abstract: China has witnessed the rapid development of mobile payment as the revolutionary idea of digitalizing has potentially reshaped many industries including payment. Various practitioners are involved in this emerging industry like Internet giants, mobile network operators, card associations, and banks. These mobile payment platform providers have walked their own way while developing the platforms. We formulate the framework in this chapter to analyze how the different platform providers determined their platform strategies by leveraging their key resources at the different stages of platform development. Three development stages including technological innovation, platform deployment, and platform scaling have been identified. The framework illustrates resource-based platform strategies in the context of China’s mobile payment development. Multiple case studies have been conducted to validate the framework we have formulated for the resource-based platform strategies of China’s mobile payment platform providers.
