Chapter 5 in Macroeconomic Analysis and Policy:A Systematic Approach, 2018, pp 91-112 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.
Abstract:
The monetary accounts provide information on an economy’s financial system. As indicated in Figure 5.1, the financial system comprises the activities of the banking system and of other financial institutions, such as savings banks, finance companies, credit unions, and microfinance agencies. The banking system, in turn, comprises the activities of the monetary authorities and of the commercial (deposit money) banks, the financial entities that normally have access to the rediscounting and lender-of-last-resort facilities of the monetary authorities. The monetary authorities and the consolidated commercial banks each have their own sets of accounts, while the accounts of the entire banking system are recorded in the monetary survey. The financial survey in turn provides a consolidated view of the economy’s entire financial system, comprising both the banks and other financial institutions.
