How to Read a Patent
Matthew Y Ma
Chapter 3 in Fundamentals of Patenting and Licensing for Scientists and Engineers, 2015, pp 58-84 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.
Abstract:
For various reasons, all inventors need to read patents at some point in time. Unfortunately, the strange patent language makes this task a difficult undertaking for many people. Moreover, a large percentage of U.S. patents were first filed in inventors' home countries, and then translated into English before they were filed in the U.S. How well a foreign patent has been translated greatly affects its readability. As with sports or hobbies, the reading of patents improves with practice. The more you read, the better you get; there is no easy way around it. This chapter is intended to give you some tips on reading patents and to help you find the right starting point.
