Abstract: Our two commentators have discussed the tension between international economic/trade law and human rights law. Professor Frank J. Garcia lays out the issues fairly, and yet I agree with Mark A.A. Warner that there is more to the story. There is greater synergy between international trade law and international human rights law than is generally recognized. When I look at international human rights law, which Garcia characterizes as deontological, I perceive that it is also efficiency-oriented. When I look at international trade law, which Garcia characterizes as utilitarian, I perceive that it can also be deontological in affirming the rights of individuals to conduct transborder transactions…
