Destructive Leadership

Petter Gottschalk

Chapter 11 in Convenience Orientation in Corporate Crime:Corrective Recovery Responses for Compliance and Conformance, 2025, pp 229-250 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: Various outcomes of destructive leadership have been discussed in previous research. One serious outcome investigated in this article is white-collar and corporate crime. The crime outcome is explored by linking characteristics of destructive leadership to propositions in the theory of convenience for white-collar and corporate crime. Convenience refers to efficiency in time and effort as well as avoidance of strain and pain. The presented conceptual research finds strong links for five out of fourteen convenience propositions: higher level status based fear and reluctance; chaos created by lack of guardianship, oversight and control; deviant identity by potential offenders; deviant learning by followers; and justification of followership. Destructive leadership seems to impact these five convenience propositions in ways that enhance the convenience of committing crime.
