The Interplay between Open Innovation and Knowledge Management in SMEs

Serdal Temel and Susanne Durst

Chapter 5 in Open Innovation and Knowledge Management in Small and Medium Enterprises, 2025, pp 73-91 from World Scientific Publishing Co. Pte. Ltd.

Abstract: In this chapter, the interplay between open innovation (OI) and knowledge management in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is addressed. More precisely, the three OI archetypes, namely the outside–in, inside–out, and coupled processes, are used to show this interplay. The chapter describes how SMEs can benefit from applying these three archetypes and what the preconditions are for applying them in the best way.
