Abstract:
Spatial expansion and population growth are turning cities into neuralgic points of the food supply chain. Because food is delivered to urban centres through conventional supply chains, consumers have become highly dependent on external supply. A possible solution for continuous and sustainable urban supply is the development of eco-distribution centres for agri-food products. Such a model can reduce pressure from population inflows, ensure fresh and high-quality food in sufficient amounts, and improve waste management in food distribution and consumption. Short agri-food chains can reduce dependence on conventional chains and create conditions for better control of production and waste disposal. The paper analyses the consumer potential of urban centres as a key determinant for designing and implementing eco-distribution centres, based on empirical research conducted in the city of Split with the participation of 148 tenants in 20 residential buildings.
