'Demasiados académicos' para o 'mundo real'? doutorados e suas perspectivas de carreira no sector empresarial

Abstract: This paper addresses the integration of scientists and technologists in industry and reports some of the findings of a major study conducted in Portugal. A survey of a large sample of doctoral students and newly graduated Ph.D.s was conducted and completed with in-depth interviews of a smaller sample of respondents. The paper aims to identify career prospects and assess the extent to which doctors are receptive to a job in industry. It is based on the assumption that such attraction depends on the individuals' attitudes towards science as a profession and towards different academic and business activities and on their exposure to academic values and work practices. It was also found that Ph.D.s perceive themselves as being overqualified for current jobs available in the Portuguese industry.
