Abstract: After ten years of deep changes in Caramuru Lubricant Plant's logistics - network centralization, product discontinuation and reduction of finished products inventory by 50% - its General Manager wondered about the possible future steps to ensure continuity in inventory reduction. Increasing make-to-order production appeared to be the most logical way, especially after finished products centralization... anyway, Dell Computers' Direct Model ® is a paradigmatic case of success in inventory centralization and make-to-order production. However, several factors should be carefully analyzed first to determine the adequacy of making products to order for a given product family.
