Enhancing Economics Education with GeoGebra: An Affordable and Customizable Tool

Kara Grant

Applied Economics Teaching Resources (AETR), 2026, vol. 8, issue 4

Abstract: Economics students often struggle with the mathematical analysis of the discipline. Interactive tools created by textbook publishers overcome some of these challenges but often impose additional costs on students and lack customizability that would optimize learning. GeoGebra is an alternative tool for students with no additional explicit cost that promotes active engagement. Through GeoGebra apps, educators can create interactive assignments, embed reflective activities into case studies, and develop other applications, all based on the instructor’s creativity. Originally designed for mathematics, GeoGebra’s graphing, spreadsheet, and algebra capabilities can be adapted to help students learn and apply economic concepts in an immersive way. Additionally, the web-based application makes it possible for activities to be used in in-person, online, or hybrid settings. The objective of this paper is to introduce economics instructors to GeoGebra by providing several examples and applications of the tool and discuss its advantages and disadvantages to better inform instructor course tool selection. It contributes to future economics pedagogy by raising awareness of an innovative, cost-effective, accessible tool that enables educators to share activities with others and create their own immersive learning environments in economics. This paper provides educators with practical insights for leveraging GeoGebra’s capabilities.
