Quo vadis székely kisgazdaság? In memoriam Alvincz József

Abstract: Agriculture and rural areas are much more significant in the new EU Member States than in the EU15. This is also the case in Romania, and similar to other new EU Member States, a dual agricultural structure has emerged in Romania following privatization. Furthermore, there are significant regional differences in the agricultural structure in Romania. In mountainous areas (including Harghita County), large farms are quite rare, and the proportion of small farms is high not only in the number of farms, but also in land use ratios. This situation raises a number of questions. Namely: what are the main characteristics of different farms, are small farms able to survive, what are the development ideas of farms and farmers? In order to answer these questions, we used several data collection and analysis methods. In addition to the processing of the literature and the analysis of official statistics, we also prepared our own questionnaire survey. After compiling the database, we also used the artificial intelligence model in addition to the usual analyses. Based on our analyses, some, slow concentration of the current landholding structure can be expected. However, the fundamentally small-scale, largely self-sufficient nature of agriculture in Székelyföld is unlikely to change in the near future.
