Collection and marketing of Non-Timber forest products in Nilgiri District of Tamil Nadu

Abstract: To study the collection and marketing the Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) by forest dewellers the present investigation was conducted in the Kotagiri taluk of Nilgiri district in Tamilnadu. A sample of ninety household was surveyed for the present study. This study revealed the NTFPs extraction, the cost and returns from NTFP collection and problems in collection and marketing. The results from the study indicated that Honey and Phoenix grass was the major NTFP collected in the study area. Through the collection of NTFP's the tribal households earning an average net income of Rs. 17276 per annum. The lack of road connectivity, long distance market and market uncertainty were the major constraints. Establishment of market for NTFPs and fixation of minimum support price could support the tribals to improve their living standards.
