Food security issue among migrant labours: A study of Juggi-Jhopri cluster in Delhi ncr

Abstract: Delhi NCR is destination of large number of migrant labours who come from neighbouring states in search of better livelihood. This paper attempts to find the food security issue among these migrant labours based on primary survey in Delhi NCR. The paper finds out that more than 80 percent and 60 percent of population are undernourished and malnourished respectively, due to deficiency of calorie and protein. Further it has found that cereal is the major contributor of calorie and protein which is contributing more than 60 percent of energy intake in survey area. Moreover the household that possess ration card and access to the PDS grain are much better than the households that do not have ration card. An econometric exercise reveals that PDS grain is positively related to energy intake (calorie and protein) with elasticity of 0.256. In the survey area more than 80 percent of household do not possess ration card due to lack of documentation. In this situation it is imperative to adopt one nation one card policy which can not only provide food to the migrant labours but also enhance the nutritional status among them.
