Abstract: The present paper examined the role of FPO in banana value chain and its impacts on farm income. A sample of 50 FPO members and 50 non-member banana growers were selected and studied. To study the functions in the banana value chain, a total of 50 market intermediaries namely pre- harvest contractor, localtrader, commission agent, wholesaler, retailer, consumer were also contacted and collected information. The study found that there is a remarkable impact of FPO such as reduced market risk, improved extension services, low input costs and other facilitation services like credit and subsidy arrangements, and reduction in transaction costs. The study identified six banana value chains (BVC). . The BVC stakeholders expressed consumer preferences, biosecurity management and proper value chain management are very important factors for the success of the banana value chains. The success of FPOs would crucially depends on assured market, postharvest support, credit and extension support. The success story of FPOs may not be replicable uniformly across the country and it is necessary to identify the region and crop-specific FPOs.
