Abstract:
The application of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) can play a pivotal role in efficient dissemination of information especially pertaining to markets and price of the commodity. One such intervention by the Govt. of India is introducing an online platform for trading of farm produce by the farmers i.e. launch of e-NAM (National Agriculture Market) in 2016. The idea behind introducing e-NAM is to have a better price discovery and transparency in all trade related activities. Since the year of launching, e-NAM was successful in integrating 1389 mandis across the country. Moreover, it has shown a path for Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) as well by linking them to markets through FPO module under e-NAM. Hence, this paper attempts to present in detail about the importance and status of e-NAM in India as well the role played by the same in linking the FPOs to markets through FPO module. Few case studies of FPOs from India who were benefitted by e-NAM were also presented in this study. The findings of the study revealed that various FPOs were able to effectively participate in the trade on e-NAM platform. Some of the FPOs were able to realize the higher prices which range from 3 percent to 38 percent.
