13. Emerging Trends in Agriculture in the Bifurcated State of Andhra Pradesh: A District-Wise Analysis

Abstract: This paper analyzes emerging agricultural trends in the bifurcated state of Andhra Pradesh through a district-wise examination from 2014 to 2019. It is based on secondary data. The performance of the agricultural sector in Andhra Pradesh is discussed for this period, and the findings have undergone a detailed analysis of the spatial patterns across the state and its regions, focusing on yield, cultivated areas, output levels, and changes that have occurred over these years. The study is concentrated on nine selected crops: Rice, Maize, Cereals, Pulses, Food Grains, Groundnut, Cotton, Chillies, and Oilseeds, as these crops occupy significant portions of cultivable land. The study reveals a considerable variation in crop productivity across different regions of Andhra Pradesh. This disparity indicates the need for a regionally differentiated strategy for the future growth and development of the agricultural sector in the state. Furthermore, the study highlights important characteristics of regions that have remained trapped in low productivity. This suggests that structural linkages between agriculture and agro- processing industries may be more pivotal in driving productivity than the mere availability of conventional inputs. The government can prioritise policies that promote the growth and spatial distribution of agro-processing industries, ensuring accessibility to farming regions to maximise productivity enhancing effects
