Changes to the agricultural work model

Amanda Krzyworka

Village and Agriculture (Wieś i Rolnictwo), 2021, vol. 190, issue 01

Abstract: In the countryside, a specific peasant model of work has been developing for a long time, described in some detail by ethnographers, historians and rural sociologists, among others. It was characterized by aspects such as: focusing on the process, not the effect, affirmation of work as such, cooperation with family members and neighbors, immersion of work in a social context. This model was subject to significant changes already in the People's Republic of Poland, and the last decades have only accelerated this process. In the face of structural transformations of the countryside, but also broader changes in the sphere of work in late modernity, values that were previously fundamental for peasants have ceased to play such an important role in the lives of contemporary farmers. They have been replaced by a different attitude, other skills have become necessary, other attitudes have become valuable, among others because farmers are aware that their children will probably have to find their own career path outside of agriculture and with this in mind, they raise them differently. The presented article shows not only new models of agricultural work and the system of values associated with them, but also the sources from which farmers draw such models.
