Abstract:
The discussion of food systems is on the global multilateral agenda. In 2021, the World Summit on Food Systems (WSFS) of the United Nations Organization was held. Previously, convened by national governments and individuals from all over society, the Dialogues of the WSFS were realized. Coordinated by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) some of them were held in Venezuela with actors and experts invited to share their opinions which would serve as inputs for a roadmap to guide the transformation of the Venezuelan Food System (SAV by its acronym in Spanish). In this article, the authors answered a questionnaire that included questions and recommendations related to what the country should do to transform the SAV, taking as a reference Action Path 2: Adopt sustainable consumption patterns. Aspects of eating habits and nutritional education, food policies, legislation, regulation and current standards, recommendations for public programs and how the food industry could contribute to them, were considered. Finally, and pointing to sustainability, how to avoid food loss and waste was asked to the respondents. The answers constitute recommendations and reflections based on science and on the voices of national and international experts, and of the United Nations agencies themselves, aimed at promoting sustainable food production as well as the education and training of consumers in concepts of sustainability, of healthy and varied diets, of the importance of reducing losses and waste, all, with the aim of strengthening local value chains and improving the poor eating pattern of Venezuelans and their nutrition, especially of the more vulnerable.
