Abstract: The ready-made garment (RMG) industry of Bangladesh is the most important industry in the country as it is one of the largest employment industries and a main source of export earnings. Nonetheless, the issue of workers conditions, efficiency, and sustainability will continue to dominate the debate on long term competitiveness of the industry. The study aims to examine how impactful a good work environment (both physical and organizational factors) on the efficiency of employees in the RMG industry. The study is a quantitative research focused on structured questionnaires to sample 400 participants among the workers of RMG industries located at major industrial zones, Dhaka, Gazipur, Narayanganj, and Chattogram. The obtained data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation, regression, ANOVA, and mediation analysis. The findings of the study indicate that both physical work environment factors (lighting, ventilation, cleanliness, safety) and organizational environment factors (leadership, job security, recognition, and communication) have statistically significant positive impacts on efficiency of the employees. The perception of employees was also identified as a strong predictor of efficiency and a part mediator of the association between work environment and efficiency. Moreover, the perception and efficiency differences were revealed based on gender specifying that inclusive and gender-sensitive workplace approaches are necessary. The study indicates that strategic design of the work environment jointly with the management practices have a significant influence on the improvement of the effectiveness of the operations. Recommendations are suggested for factory managers, human resource professionals and policymakers to initiate both infrastructural and psychological upgrading that can lead to healthy labor productivity in the long-term.
