Abstract:
The main objective of this paper is to highlight the importance of regional development in Europe’s economic and social integration. Assuming that the diversity of the European regions does not represent an impediment for the regional development, because it does not aim at global uniformity but at achieving, quintessentially, a decent living standard within. Two tendencies of regional development, which have succeeded one another in different moments in time, have been identified: regional convergence (an attenuation of the regional disparities) and regional development divergence (a deepening of regional disparities).
