To screen or not to screen: Congenital dislocation of the hip

Abstract: A list of criteria, some disease-related and some screening test-related, is presented for use in assessing the value of screening for a particular disease or disorder. Based on these criteria, and on the principle that an unrequested screening test is not justified unless its advantages clearly outweigh its disadvantages, mass screening programs to identify children with dislocated hips are judged to be unethical at this time. Physicians can, however, incorporate a hip assessment into their physical examination.
