Educational philanthropy: What are the predictors?

Asya Cooley

Journal of Education Advancement & Marketing, 2017, vol. 2, issue 1, 46-56

Abstract: Educational institutions have been traditionally considered as non-profit organisations, relying on individuals’ compassion and commitment to educational objectives. Studying the predictors of philanthropy to education is an important facet of educational philanthropy research. We identify three block predictors: human capital, social capital and financial capital predictors. Previous studies report that age, income and volunteering are major predictors of philanthropy. Our study shows that although, individually, these characteristics showed significant correlation with educational giving, there were other important factors that served as better predictors. Specifically, voting, homeownership and income were the top best predictors of educational philanthropy, according to our model.
