Abstract: In an environment of persistently low interest rates and low profitability, coupled with the impact of the health crisis, the European banking sector is facing many challenges, some of which may be partly related to overcapacity issues. Since 2009, mergers and acquisitions have slowed down in Europe, following the many deals made in response to the 2008 financial crisis. This article analyses the links between bank concentration and financial stability. It provides an overview of bank concentration in France and Europe and compares it to that observed in the United States. Finally, it highlights the importance of completing the European Banking Union to foster consolidation and contribute to enhancing the profitability of the European banking sector in the face of international competition and the emergence of new players in the era of digital transformation.

Dans un environnement de taux d’intérêt durablement bas et de faible rentabilité, auquel s’ajoute l’impact de la crise sanitaire, le secteur bancaire européen fait face à de nombreux défis, dont certains pourraient en partie être liés à des problèmes de surcapacités. Les fusions acquisitions ont en effet ralenti en Europe depuis 2009, à la suite des nombreuses opérations réalisées en réponse à la crise financière de 2008. Cet article analyse les liens entre la concentration bancaire et la stabilité financière. Il dresse un constat de la concentration bancaire en France et en Europe et la compare à celle observée aux États Unis. Enfin, il met en avant l’importance de l’achèvement de l’Union bancaire européenne pour favoriser cette consolidation et contribuer à améliorer la rentabilité du secteur bancaire européen face à la concurrence internationale et à l’émergence de nouveaux acteurs à l’heure de la transformation numérique.
