Persistent Problems in Measuring Household Production

Abstract: Abstract. Three problems continue to plague household production researchers: definition of household production, method of dealing with joint‐production activities and the appropriate valuation of household production. Each of these problems is analyzed and ways of resolving it suggested. Particular attention is paid to the valuation question. It is shown here that the appropriate method of valuation is one which is consistent with economic theory. This, in turn, will depend critically on the purpose of valuation.
