Abstract: Abstract Using a large Current Population Survey approach, the question whether extensive job losses have consequences stmilar to natural disasters was considered for a Mid Western region Data were gathered in March 1987 on 1,625 households representing over 3,607 individuals 16 years of age or older Also collected were data by oceupation and industry at time of job loss and at time of interview, reasoons for job loss and lenght of time out of work by age, race and sex, among other varrables Results indicate that of the 436 persons aged 20 or over who had lost a job since January 1980, the majority had sufficient resources to adequately cope with job loss and continuous long term unem ployment was not prevalent However, older workers suffered more effects and wage losses were common overall A antural disaster interpretation is not ap propriate
