Abstract:
This article reviews the international debate on statistical indicators. It describes historical backgrounds, as well as the present chaotic situation. It discusses what statistical indicators are and what they are for, as well as criteria for the choice of indicators, designed to monitor the achievement of economic, social, demographic, environmental and other goals set by United Nations conferences. Some suggestions for future work are made. Cet article examine le débat international sur les indicateurs statistiques. Il décrit le contexte historique, ainsi que la situation chaotique actuelle. II discute ce que sont les indicateurs statistiques et à quoi ils servent. Il débat aussi de critéres pour le choix d' indicateurs, concus pour suivre la réalisation des objectifs économiques, sociaux, démographiques, environnementaux et autres, fixés par les conférences des Nations Unies. Des pistesde travail pour I' avenir sont suggérées.
