Abstract:
This paper provides a critical review of the literature of agricultural development economics over the past thirty years, against the background of a contention that the discipline has recently lost some influence on the policy agenda. The literature is discussed in categories which are thematic and chronological: farm economics; project planning; policy reform; environmental economics and the new institutional economics. Recommendations are made as to directions in which the discipline should move forward.
