Abstract:
The problems facing the Biodeterioration Information Centre in locating published material in a newly emerging, interdisciplinary subject are outlined, together with the various ways in which reasonably comprehensive coverage might be achieved. The method of reference collection finally adopted relies on the cooperation of specialist workers in biodeterioration–“cooperating specialists”–and the method of operation of the scheme is described. The scheme is still in an early stage of development, but results suggest that its successful operation is possible, providing that the activities of the cooperating specialists are well monitored by the Centre. There are certain other advantages for a specialized information center in maintaining a close link with a body of experts in the field.
