Retrieval parameters in growing data bases

Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1972, vol. 23, issue 5, 333-334
Abstract:
In a recent article (1) Gerard Salton considered the question of how certain retrieval parameters can be estimated for large collections from their values in small collections. The purpose of this communication is to suggest that in the situation where documents are retrieved independently the desired parameters may be estimated more accurately by sampling and averaging techniques over homogeneous subparts of the data base. It is also suggested that certain changes in the nomenclature of the parameters would help to avoid ambiguities in their interpretation.
