A Correlation of Bibliographic Data Elements for use in a Generalized File Management System

Dennis R. Elchesen

Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1973, vol. 24, issue 1, 45-53

Abstract: Data elements contained in sixteen commercial and national bibliographic data bases have been merged to form a single, correlated set. This correlation, part of a generalized file management system developed at LLL, has led to several improvements in the Laboratory's activities in current awareness and information retrieval: standardization of the system command language, increased uniformity in output display formats, a mechanism for selective extraction and transfer of records among data bases, and simplification of the programming required for data conversion. The correlation is compatible with most existing and proposed data‐element standards and may prove useful in any information system employing multiple bibliographic data bases.
