Abstract:
This Communication raiser the issue that an important factor to be considered in applying clustering techniques to information storage and retrieval problems is the use to be made of the resultant groupings. The different purposes that different classifications serve and the different types of responses that appear satisfactory for different types of queries and different typos of users, for example, suggest that an examination of cluster criteria differentiation as a function of purpose may be fruitful in the exploitation of clustering techniques.
