Abstract:
An experimental framework for observing an indexing task carried out in a laboratory environment is described. The computer‐based, interactive Negotiated Search Facility served as the instrument which the experimenter used to monitor the indexing task and the tool which the indexer used to carry out the task. The methodology developed enables us to gain an experimental control that is characteristic of laboratory environments and a breadth of process observation that is characteristic of case studies, An initial indexing experiment is described and we highlight the training procedure necessary to enable people who are not computer‐oriented to make effective use of an interactive terminal.
