Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1974, vol. 25, issue 5, 308-311
Abstract:
To meet statutory requirements for searches, which are unique in their intellectual complexity and in their recall, precision and speed demands, the U.S. Patent Office has developed and maintains a manually‐accessed classification system for its 20 million patent documents. This ever‐expanding system has operated successfully for more than 75 years, and also performs administrative and awareness functions.
