Reduction of data generation costs

Daniel U. Wilde and H. David Chafe

Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1975, vol. 26, issue 2, 103-107

Abstract: The difficulty and expense of acquiring textual material in machine‐readable form is a major barrier to more extensive use of computers in libraries. This paper discusses the reduction of data generation costs, by the use of the IBM MT/ST typewriter and tape converter to eliminate redundancy in keying opera‐ tions. Their use in the production of World Aluminum Abstracts is presented as a typical application.
