Abstract:
Printed bibliographic descriptions of journal articles cited by BioSciences Information Service of Biological Abstracts (SIOSIS), Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS), and Engineering Index (Ei) were compared to identify similarities and differences in form, format and data content. Collectively, the three services use 15 different bibliographic data elements, five to provide a description of the journal issue and ten to describe the article. All three services used eight of the 15 data elements. Of the remaining seven data elements, four were used by two of the three services and three were used by only one of the services. The differences in the content of the three services' printed bibliographic descriptions do not adversely affect the user's ability to identify the cited publications.
