An experiment in networking: The LHNCBC experimental CAI network, 1971–1975

Abstract:
This is an administrative history of an information network. In somewhat less than four years, the Lister Hill National Center for Biomedical Communications of the National Library of Medicine built this network, demonstrated a substantial demand for its services, encouraged it to become self‐sustaining, and transferred support and operation to a user consortium. The paper is concerned with the process, and some of the problems, of innovation rather than the product, biomedical computer‐assisted instruction.
