Transmission of information: An overview

Abstract: This article starts by discussing the basic principles of, and fundamental limitations encountered in, the transmission of information. A review of different types of networks is presented next, followed by a discussion of two relatively recent transmission media, satellites and optical fibers, that are increasingly being used to implement the networks.
