Optical disk for digital storage and retrieval systems

Denis A. Rose

Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1983, vol. 34, issue 6, 434-438

Abstract: The availability of low‐cost digital optical disks will revolutionalize storage and retrieval systems over the next decade. Three major factors will effect this change: 1 Availabilityof the disks and controllers at low‐cost 2 Availability of lowcost and better output means 3 More flexible, less expensive communication net These capabilities will, for the first time, allow system users to merge “digital Images” and encoded data (alphanumeric) information into the same Information base. This capability to merge images and data will result in a lower cost of handling today's application and, additionally, offer new opportunities. and plentiful supply. for the system users. work capabilities.
