Trends in telecommunications technology

Arthur E. Sherman

Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1986, vol. 37, issue 6, 414-417

Abstract: With deregulation and competition, new technologies are being introduced into the telephone network at an accelerating pace and will affect both the economic and regulatory aspects of the industry. The technologies will offer new flexibility, ease of use, and functionality. The future communications network now evolving will allow users to tailor cost‐effective communications solutions to specific applications. This article discusses the past, present, and future of network switching and transmission technology, intelligent networks, integration of communication services, transmission options, high‐capacity transmission, and the impact of these developments on the management of telecommunications in user organizations. © 1986 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
