Abstract:
Library book circulation does not appear to be a Poisson process. It is proposed that a binomial process is more logical and that the mixture distribution for individual book popularities is a continuous beta distribution. Three examples are given which indicate the superiority of the beta—over the negative binomial distribution. A bivariate beta‐binomial should be of help to the librarian in predicting future book circulations. © 1987 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
