Indexing for invention

Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1991, vol. 42, issue 3, 173-177
Abstract:
This article describes work on developing an indexing system tailored to the thinking involved in the process of invention. The system facilitates the process (and technical problem solving in general) through connecting technical needs with possible answers in a database. The article discusses the process of invention and then describes a functional indexing system for aiding it. The system was developed from the results of classifying 3,000 industrial products by their functions and distinctive attributes. The procedure for indexing entails describing the functions of technologies with controlled vocabularies of verbs, objects, and modifiers. © 1991 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
