Virtual reality: Advanced imaging special effects let you roam in cyberspace

Abstract: We describe current embodiments of Virtual Reality: a computer‐synthesized three‐dimensional environment (cyberspace) in which a plurality of human participants, appropriately interfaced, may engage and manipulate simulated physical elements in the environment and, in some forms, may engage and interact with representations of each other, and in projected future versions, may interact with representations of other humans, past, present, or fictional, or invented creatures. We discuss the development of Virtual Reality through the converging technologies of simulation of advanced aerospace and military equipment, digital imaging, and motion picture special effects (F/X), and examine its likely future course and impacts including those in libraries. © 1991 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
