An electronic publishing model for academic publishers

Jon D. Gold

Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1994, vol. 45, issue 10, 760-764

Abstract: Academic publishers considering electronic publishing face several questions: What is the format of the electronic book? How will it be delivered? How will the copyright be protected when the book is available in digital form? One scenario from the publisher's point of view is this: Why will a university buy 400 copies of a textbook if it can pay for one digital copy and run off as many iterations as needed from a personal computer and laser printer? This question specifically presents a stumbling block for many publishers who might otherwise be interested in electronic publishing. This article delineates the electronic publishing model that was presented to an academic publisher, examines the publisher's concerns, and then explores some possible answers to those questions. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
