A cognitive view of the situational dynamism of user‐centered relevance estimation

Harry W. Bruce

Journal of the American Society for Information Science, 1994, vol. 45, issue 3, 142-148

Abstract: Research aimed at observing the interaction between users and information systems has traditionally been diminished by the difficulties associated with controlling the situational dynamism of user‐centered relevance estimation. This article identifies a methodology for operationalizing this concept from a cognitive view. It proposes a framework which allows the user to articulate the cognitive schema that is used for estimating relevance and a methodology for recording the changes to this schema that occur during the information‐retrieval interaction. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
