Tiered citation and measures of document similarity

Abstract: The degree of subject similarity between pairs of cited and citing documents is frequently small. One factor may be the ways in which authors draw upon and cite the work of others. The idea of tiered, or multilayered, citation is proposed as a means of testing this hypothesis. A tentative citation typology is outlined. © 1994 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
