Abstract:
Significant institutional and external trends are influencing the direction of reference services at the William H. Welch Medical Library. These trends include institutional restructuring and consolidation, improvements in technology infrastructure, and fiscal accountability, as well as external economic pressure. We describe fundamental programmatic changes in our reference services over the past decade and speculate on what Reference may mean for us at the millenium, given our growing instructional role. We also relate the cost center model used to fund the Library's programs to current trends and offer perspective on challenges we expect to face in fulfilling our mission in the face of these trends. © 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
